plant native wildflowers

why you should do it

Native wildflowes can help conserve water, reduce mowing costs, provide habitat for birds, butterflies and other wildlife, protect soils, mitigate flooding, and reduce temperatures in urban areas.

Wilflowers are an easy introduction to outdoor gardening. They're low cost, easy to plant, and nearly foolproof to grow.

how you can do it

  1. Purchase native wildflower seeds suitable for your region.
  2. Identify the correct planting time for your geographic area. Typically, you plant in spring after all threat of a late frost has passed.
  3. Pick a sunny spot (at least six hours of sun a day) unless you have a shade seed mix.
  4. You'll get the best results if you clear the area of any grass or weeds. You can till with a tool, or lay a tarp down in advance. If you don't need or don't have time for this step, continue onward.
  5. Sprinkle away! Make sure you sprinkle your seeds so that they all get some "breathing room."
  6. Compress your seeds — just walking over the soil with your shoes will do the job!
  7. Water every day. Your new little plants are thirsty!
